5 Tips for Hiking with Kids

Let’s be honest. Hiking with kids can have its challenges. But despite the extra effort, the reward of getting outdoors together is forever worth the effort! Here are our 5 tips hiking with kids:

1. Trail treats

We don't eat a lot of candy in our house. But when we go out for hikes, I stash my pack with all kinds of goodies that I normally say no to. When the energy starts to fade, I say, "Okay, how about we make it up that hill and then we'll stop for a candy break."

It works every time!

2. Hiking apps + map

"How much longer do we have to go?" The answer was never satisfying when I pulled out our map and said, "Oh, about half a pinky finger more." Everything changed when we got the AllTrails app which tracks our progress on the trail in real time. My kids love seeing exactly where we are and I love the reassurance that we haven't wandered off trail.

3. Expect some complaining

I didn’t like hiking when I was a kid. But much thanks to my dad, who took us out hiking anyway. Today, I love hiking so much I can’t wait to get my own kids outdoors! Hiking is a love that is cultivated with time and experience. Be patient and ready to shake off that complaining. Someday your kids will thank you.

4. Plan a special treat

at the end

The reward of a hard hike for you might be the incredible view or time spent in nature. Your kids may need something more concrete like ice cream or a treat from the gift shop. A tangible reward for their hard work will boost your kids' motivation.

5. Be safe and reasonable

Select hikes that are doable for your kid's age and ability. Introduce longer and more difficult hikes only after gaining experience with easier hikes first. Kids should carry their own backpack with water, a few extra granola bars and an emergency kit. And make sure they know to stay in place and "hug a tree" if ever they find themselves lost.

And most of all, take time to enjoy the experience of hiking with your kids. It may be a little while before you can do those longer and harder hikes all together. But every trip outdoors is a chance to connect with nature and each other in ways that our busy, everyday lives sometimes neglects. And take lots of pictures. You can’t hear complaining in the pictures - and soon enough everyone will forget about the complaining and remember only the awesomeness of the adventure!

As always, be sure to check local resources for weather, road conditions and COVID-19 related closures when planning your trip. And don’t forget to post your photos to #lifelivedoregonstyle on Instagram. We’ll see you out there!
